Despite the fact that people think of him as a father, he severely punished people for their faults. For example, Prometheus, who stole fire for men, was chained to a rock. Every day an eagle flew to him and pecked his liver.

Zeus was officially married three times. His first wife was Oceanides Metida. She was very clever. Thanks to her, Zeus' brothers and sisters were freed from Kronos. She prepared a potion that made Cronus regurgitate all the children he had swallowed. Metida had a sad end. Zeus devoured her, turning her into a fly, for Rhea had predicted that she would give birth to a child who would surpass Zeus. Metida grew Athena in his head, who later emerged from him.

Zeus' next wife was Themis. She had the gift of divination. She was the daughter of Gaia and Uranus. From Zeus she bore three goddesses of the seasons.

Zeus' third marriage was to Hera. She was Zeus' sister. Hera is very jealous of her husband's infidelity. She puts her husband's mistresses and illegitimate children to the real test. Ogako all the hardships the hero has endured have made them stronger and more resilient.

Zeus's unofficial liaisons were many. The most famous of these are:

  1. Demeter: one of Zeus' sisters. She bore from him Persephone, who would be the wife of Hades, god of the earthly kingdom.
  2. Cadma: the daughter of King Cadmus. Hera made sure she was burned by Zeus' lightning. Cadma was already pregnant with Dionysus. Zeus took it out of the dead woman's womb and sewed it into his thigh. There he carried it until the hour of childbirth came.
  3. Maya: Atlantean's daughter. After entering into a relationship with her, Hermes, the messenger of the gods, was born.

Besides the goddesses, Zeus had an attraction to earthly women as well. Among them:

  1. Niobe: bore him Argos and Pelasgus.
  2. Europa: bore him Minos and Sarpedon.
  3. Leda: wife of King Sarpedon. This provoked the Trojan War.
  4. Alcmene: To meet her Zeus took the form of her husband

The main symbol of Zeus was a stylized lightning bolt. He waved it like a spear. Other symbols of Zeus were the royal scepter, the eagle, and the shield (a symbol of anger and fury).

The ancient Greeks greatly honored and worshipped Zeus. In honor of Zeus, as a sign of worship, a temple, unique in its grandeur, was erected in 471-456 BC. It was designed by Libonus, the architect of ancient Greece. People used to come here to confess their sins to Zeus. Today only some fragments of the temple are preserved. Scientists and archaeologists have recreated the look that the temple of Zeus of Olympus once had, according to the descriptions of the ancients. The building was impressive in its magnificence, it was impossible to take your eyes away from it. In the temple were paintings depicting the victory of civilization over illiteracy and savagery.

In 406 BC the ruling Theodosius gave orders to destroy all the temples of Olympia because it was a sign of pagan worship. The remains of the temple were destroyed by earthquakes in 522 and 551. Fragments of the temple have survived to this day. They are preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia and in the Louvre in Paris.
